Cheap 3D printer: how 3D printing works
If you are new to the world of 3d printing and need the basics.
The process is not very different from what we use to print a document with the traditional printer we have at home.
In fact, it is sufficient to create the model of the object you want to create: the project will then be sent to the printer which will build it in front of our eyes, layer by layer.
The object to be printed can be designed with a 3D-modeling software (such as Autocad ) or, alternatively, a 3D scan of an existing object or, even more simply, a “preset” model downloaded from the Internet is fine…
Where’s the catch? There is not!
The printer works because the document that is sent to print contains all the details of the final product: length, depth, and materials to be used.
The printer software, in fact, is able to “break down” the model into several smaller layers that are printed one at a time and then stacked one on top of the other.
The technology of an inexpensive 3D printer
There are different types of printing technologies to print in three dimensions, such as material extrusion ( FDM ), tank curing ( SLA and DLP ), Powder Bed Fusion ( SLS, DMLS & SLM ) Material Jetting ( MJ ).
The economic 3D printers, as well as professional 3D printers, are of two different types:
- FFM (fused filament manufacturing)
- SLA (stereolithography).
The FFM printers operate with a technology based on a nozzle that deposits, layer after layer, a molten polymer, up to the final piece.
In other words: a plastic filament is dissolved in a moving print head which, piece by piece, creates the desired object.
The laser sintering technique (SLA) instead uses a laser to synthesize powdered plastic material which is then transformed into a solid structure.
In other words: a very thin layer of powder is spread on the work platform so that, layer by layer, the laser solidifies the powder, finally arriving at the final result.
FFM printers are generally cheaper (and also easier to use).
However, some SLA models are becoming increasingly affordable.
What are the 3D Printing Materials?
As we have just seen, most of the low-cost 3D printers are filament printers.
The printing mechanism rotates around the thin plastic thread which, once melted, descends to the surface of the object.
It is important to know that the filaments that are used are made up of different materials.
Once you have chosen the printer that is right for you, you will have to decide which materials to use.
The most common plastics are ABS and PLA.
L ‘ ABS, so to speak, is the same plastic that is used for the Lego blocks. It is resistant, robust but also very light.
A valid alternative for more eco-friendly 3D printers is PLA (which is nothing more than the bioplastic with which biodegradable disposable tableware is produced).
Another material now increasingly used is polypropylene, characterized by high ductility and excellent thermal and abrasion resistance.
In practice, it can be used to create truly indestructible objects (as well as being a lower-cost material due to its high technical properties).
Many of these materials are available in a wide range of colors.
The filaments, on the other hand, are available in two sizes: 1.75 mm and 3 mm.
SLA printers have fewer options than their FFM counterparts – they don’t use plastics but usually resins to produce rigid, flexible, or rubber models.
The print volume
The print volume is another important specification for choosing an affordable 3d printer.
A larger volume will allow us to reproduce larger objects.
The limit for the print volume is defined by the size of the print bed and how far the printer can move the print head.
It is usually measured in cubic inches, which determines the maximum 3D print size the device can create.
Let’s take an example: If a printer has a print volume of 223 inches (6.2 x 6 x 6 inches), it can print objects that are up to 6 inches (15 cm) high in height, width, and depth.
If we need to print a model of a historic building or similar products, it is advisable to opt for a less economical printer that allows us to complete any project without problems.
If, on the other hand, our goal is to create pieces of art, figurines, small pieces of costume jewelry, practically any cheap 3D printer can do for us.
The thickness of the layers
Another specification to keep an eye on is the thickness of the layers the machine can reproduce.
Let’s not forget, in fact, that 3d printers create objects through a layered system.
The thickness of the latter indicates the maximum print resolution.
Clearly, the thinner the layers, the cleaner the printed object will be, giving the perception of a single, well-defined layer.
But be careful: a thinner layer will take longer to complete the print.
Therefore the choice of thickness is not a simple choice.
In general, it is advisable that the thickness of the layer/layer does not exceed half the width of the nozzle: for example with a 0.4 mm nozzle the maximum thickness of the layer for a good print is 0.2 mm;
3D printers can be very slow.
After having sent our project to print, you need to arm yourself with a healthy dose of patience and … wait.
A model that measures around 10cm usually takes between 6 and 12 hours to print.
As we have just seen, 3D printing works in layers:
The thicker the layers, the faster the printing will be… but at the expense of the quality of the object produced.
